FEMA, Covid-related death, and funeral cost assistance

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing financial relief to families who lost a loved one to COVID-19. If your loved one’s death was attributed to COVID-19, you paid for the funeral after January 20, 2020, you did not receive assistance for funeral costs from another source such as burial or funeral insurance, and other criteria, you might be eligible for up to $9,000 of financial relief.

Before applying for assistance, gather the death certificate and proof of funeral expenses such as the funeral home contract or funeral receipt.

FEMA’s assistance is for funeral expenses. The list of covered expenses is quite long and includes burial or cremation, transportation of two people to identify the loved one, casket or urn expenses, burial plot, headstone, clergy services, and even costs of obtaining several death certificates, among other things.
